Backing Up Your RMS

Important! The entire PC should be backed up regularly.

Hosted RMS

Hosted systems have their data automatically and redundantly backed up every day.  Backups for hosted systems are stored in multiple locations.

Use a Drive

External backups, which plug into the printer port or a USB port, are easy to install.  Make sure the capacity of the drive is large enough to hold all of your PC’s data.  The capacity of a PC hard drive is measured in GB (gigabytes, which is about 1 billion bytes).  Refer to your PC specifications to determine the size of your hard drive.  You must create, and store in a safe place, an emergency restore disk using your backup software (create two while you are at it), refer to any backup software documentation for assistance.

Backup the Entire PC Every Day you are Open for Business

Be sure and set the backup procedure to backup all files on the PC.  The Window’s "Registry" should also be backed up.  The backup should be set to overwrite existing old backups.  Be sure you are backing up the PC that contains the RMS data.  The RMS data is usually located in the RMS4 , RMS5 or an OPTIMUM folder.

Restricted Backups

If you must restrict the amount of information that you backup (not recommended), you may backup just the RMS4, RMS5 or OPTIMUM folder (verify this!).  To restore a working RMS you would have to have a working PC and then restore this folder backup.

The minimum backup is to backup the following files (the * is a "wildcard" that represents any characters and any number of them, Windows understands this):  RMS*.DAT, RMS*.DXR and *.FIL.  These files are in the RMS4 , RMS5 or OPTIMUM folder (verify this!)  To restore a working RMS, you would have to have a working PC, reinstall the RMS programs and database from the original CD or Downloads source and then restore this file only backup.
